FOCUS FRIENDS

Why Georgia Tech?

For the seventh consecutive year and the eighth time in the past decade, U.S. News and World Report has ranked the Georgia Institute of Technology as one of the top 10 public universities in the nation. Tech was ranked No. 9 among the nation's public universities for undergraduates and No 37 among all American universities, up four slots from the previous year.

"Over the last decade Georgia Tech has shown the consistency in performance that reflects the quality of this institution," said Georgia Tech Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jean-Lou Chameau. "I'm pleased to see that excellence continue, despite the challenges that we face in today's competitive higher education marketplace.

Why FOCUS?

This component of the FOCUS program seeks to encourage academically gifted high school seniors to explore the benefits of a Georgia Tech education. FOCUS Friends are exposed to undergraduate degree programs, support programs, and other student services. They also benefit from the opportunity to interact with other top students who have chosen to pursue advanced degrees in their chosen fields.

During the FOCUS weekend, Friends will:

  • Hear from representatives of the six colleges at Georgia Tech on topics including majors, minors, and international study.
  • Tour the campus, which includes residence halls, research laboratories, and recreational facilities.
  • Learn about the support programs available and the importance of team interaction, study habits, and getting off to a strong start.
  • Hear from the admissions staff regarding the application, admission requirements, admission cycle, and deadlines.
  • Hear from current undergraduate students regarding the Georgia Tech experience, including academic life, student life, organization involvement, challenges, and successes.
  • Learn about time, money, and grade management; as well as health, wellness, safety, and other support resources available.
  • Attend a dinner hosted by Georgia Tech President Wayne Clough, which features a prominent figure as keynote speaker.
  • Attend an ecumenical service to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which includes a speech by a distinguished guest.
